The character of Luang Prabang is shaped by its rivers and the jungle-covered karst mountains that surround it. There are no high-rise modern hotels here, as strict heritage regulations govern everything from building heights and construction materials to exterior lighting.
In the early hours of the morning, the town reveals an entirely different side. Just 25 kilometres from the town lies Kuang Si Falls, where water cascading over limestone terraces forms a series of turquoise pools deep within the jungle. Visit in the early morning, when humid sunlight filters through the trees, and the sound of rushing water creates a peaceful experience away from the crowds.
Across the river, small villages such as Ban Chan are known for their traditional pottery and can be reached within minutes by a simple wooden boat crossing the Mekong.
